Two hundred and thirty-five kilometres down the east side of the island, about four and a half hours. The road leaves the peninsula on the A9, turns east at Paranthan and follows the coast through Mullaitivu. It is one of the quieter drives in Sri Lanka: lagoons, fishing villages, long stretches with nothing but palmyra. Trincomalee itself has one of the deepest natural harbours in the world, the Koneswaram temple on the cliff at Swami Rock, and Nilaveli beach fifteen kilometres north. Whales pass offshore between May and September. Most families we drive there leave Point Pedro early and are swimming by lunchtime.
