The other side of the island.

Trincomalee sits on one of the world's great natural harbours, with Koneswaram temple on the cliff of Swami Rock above the sea. North of town the sand runs in long pale lines, and at Pasikuda the bay is so shallow you can walk far out and still stand.

Batticaloa gathers around its lagoon, famous for the legend of the singing fish. At the far end, Arugam Bay is one of Asia's best-known surf breaks. And when the south-west coast turns rainy, this side of the island is usually in full sun — the seasons run opposite here.
