The wild island.

Yala, in the south-east, has some of the highest leopard densities recorded anywhere; Wilpattu, older and quieter, hides its animals around a string of natural lakes. Udawalawe is the sure thing for elephants — herds graze in the open almost every day of the year.

Sinharaja is different: a UNESCO rainforest of endemic birds and dripping green. And on Gal Oya's reservoir the safari goes by boat, drifting past islands where elephants sometimes swim from shore to shore.
