The classic coast.

This is the Sri Lanka of the postcards. Negombo sits just up the road from the airport, all fishing boats and canals; Bentota and Hikkaduwa are the old resort names; and Galle keeps its Dutch fort — ramparts, a lighthouse and streets of galleries — almost intact.

Keep going and the crowds thin: the quiet bays around Tangalle, the surf, and the temple town of Kataragama where pilgrims of every faith walk to the shrine. Colombo, when you want it, is the big city — markets, cafés and the ocean front at sunset.
