Three hundred and twenty kilometres straight down the A9, about seven hours. The road runs through Kilinochchi, Vavuniya and Dambulla, so the landscape changes completely as you go: flat palmyra country, then dry-zone scrub, then the first hills. Kandy was the last royal capital of Sri Lanka and held out against the Portuguese and the Dutch until 1815. The Temple of the Tooth sits by the lake in the middle of town, and the Esala Perahera fills the streets with elephants and dancers in July and August. It is a long day in the van if you go and come back, so most people we drive stay at least one night.
