Two hundred kilometres, about four hours, and the easiest long drive from the peninsula. Anuradhapura was the island’s first capital and stayed so for more than a thousand years. The Sri Maha Bodhi is said to be grown from a cutting of the tree the Buddha sat under, planted in the third century BC, which would make it the oldest human-planted tree on record. The great dagobas — Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya, Abhayagiri — are spread over a wide site, so it is worth having the van with you rather than walking between them in the heat. Comfortable as a day trip from Point Pedro.
